It's only one day before the big Celebration! I was very torn in choosing a space for the event--in these economical times I didn't want to give a party that was too slick, so it was essential to find the right venue. I love the Armory because it's a raw, empty space that sort of reminds me of a high school gym.

Similar to how doctors shouldn’t treat their own family, it doesn’t work for me to plan my own parties. So, I turned to the best for help with the Celebrations launch party (and many others--Marcy and I have worked together for years).

Yesterday's post got me thinking more about servers and attendants at events. I believe in great service as much as anyone, in fact I pride myself on giving grade A service, but there is always a limit. For instance, I still find it incredibly uncomfortable when I go to the bathroom and finish my business to find a usually very sweet attendant trying to hand me a towel for a tip.

New York is a very diverse city, and I love bringing together folks from all groups: uptown, downtown, celebrities, royalty, clients, gay, straight, etc... I find that with great décor and enough food and drink everyone has a wonderful time and gets along fabulously.

One of my first clients was Christie's in New York City in 1983. I was fascinated to see old master paintings in these wonderful, traditional frames. Since then, this interest has evolved and become a part of my design aesthetic. December is one of my busiest months! I'm leaving today for an international job I have been eagerly anticipating. That’s why I like to make a big deal out of Thanksgiving and hand out presents early because I'm always away working for Christmas. (Though, don't get me wrong. We put up the window display today for my new book Celebrations at the Barnes and Noble on Fifth avenue. Similar to the display at Rizzoli, the theme of the window was to bring the book cover to life by using various types of silk flowers and fabric rosettes. I felt like a kid in a candy store exploring this fabric shop. One of the things I enjoy about traveling is exploring different cultures and seeing what sort of unique  resources each country offers. Last night, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Theo Bleckmann play at the Neue Galerie. The performance was sold out and even though he's my partner, I gave up my seat and joined the standing room. I know I may be a little biased, but he is one of the best jazz vocalists around. Even now, when I see him perform, his amazing voice still brings me to tears.
